Frameline 42, Week Two

As you show some support for the LGBTQ community in your new “Purride” cat T-shirt — if you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s a homophone joke predicated on the similarity of the onomatopoeic term for a contented feline sound to the word associated with this month’s festivities — there are still plenty of interesting moving images to catch as Frameline heads into its big final weekend. On the history front, Matt Trynauer’s documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood is about the 94-year-old Scotty Bowers, who once facilitated all manner of sexual liaisons between squeaky-clean movie stars.

More recently, it’s been fun watching the chauvinistic film world deal with the fact that the best work isn’t always created for theatrical exhibition, and Frameline’s semantic compromise is the “Episodic” category. Introduced last year, it’s now the fourth category to have its own Centerpiece — alongside US Feature, World Cinema, and Documentary — and it purports to showcase how television “has become a fresh and relevant addition to the festival conversation.” The Centerpiece Episodic is Rightor Doyle’s seven-episode, 107-minute Bonding, about a gay man and his straight female best friend in New York. Not the most groundbreaking subject, but Frameline says Bonding is “sure to be one of the most talked-about episodics of 2018.” Suck it, Westworld!

Now playing at the Castro, Roxie, and Victoria Theatres.
