One would think even those with their hearts dead set on opening a restaurant would be lying low during these uninspiring economic times. So some of us were surprised to see the empty space between Panera Bread and Philz Coffee (right across the street from SF Weekly's world headquarters) evolving into a rather sleek restaurant named Tsunami -- which opened its doors to the public just this afternoon.

Tsunami is the third SF dining spot concocted by the Dajani Group, which also runs the Tsunami Sushi Bar on Fulton and the Nihon Whiskey Bar on Folsom.

Driven oyster-crazy by this week's cover story,

I stopped in at 5:30 p.m. not so much to review the place --Meredith

Brody would have my hide for reviewing a restaurant on day one!-- but

to sample the half-shells on their menu. The options: "Hood Canal" from Washington

State, "Hurricane Harbor" from Nova Scotia and "Buckley Bay" from

British Columbia; $2 ea. or $20 for a dozen. I figured, if Tsunami didn't care about the recession, maybe I shouldn't either, and sampled them all.

The dining area opened at 6 p.m., so GM Tessa

Fernandez (who Tablehopper tells us was formerly of Bacar Restaurant and Americano) let me choose between the bar

and a large community table at right. I opted for the table and ordered champagne cocktail "Love for Sale" (which contains St. Germain, lemon juice and Cava) from their extensive sake and spirits menu. It was deliciously tart.

I was surprised to learn I was the restaurant's first customer. But I wasn't the lone soul at Tsunami for long -- the SoMa crowd trickled in and by the time I wandered out the place was full of chattering clientèle.

Tsunami will be dinner and drinks only for Feb., Fernadez told me. But there will be a lunch menu and happy hour specials in the works, possibly up and running as soon as next month.

Anyway, enough of my non-reviewing. Here are more photos:
