Octopus Tostada from Mariscos La Costa

As a daily windup to the Weekly's Best of S.F. 2010 on May 19, we've teased out 92 of our favorite local dishes that taste like here. All the tasty details after the jump.

Number 46: Octopus Tostada from Mariscos La Costa

Owner Octavio Avila has roots in the old bracero communities of Brentwood and Oakley, but the Oakland branch of Avila's Jalisco-flavored seafood coctel place (a sort of overgrown street stand, with a takeaway window and picnic tables clustering outdoors under a deep overhang) is pure Fruitvale. Weekends, the table are jammed with families post-mass, groups of vatos dressed for Sunday in cowboy boots and creased slacks, and saggy-jean young guys in soccer jerseys. While nearly all the ceviche-topped tostadas here are a delight (stay away from the imitation jaiva, crabmeat), our favorite is pulpo, octopus: satisfyingly chewy hunks of purplish boiled tentacles, marinated in lime juice, scattered on its crispy fried tortilla with a welter of onion, tomato, and cucumber. On sunny days, there's arguably no purer taste of the beach anywhere in the Bay.
