Food, Inc. Whistle-Blower Coming to Bay Area for Series of Sustainability Talks

"One more question, Mr. Pollan? Yes, thanks ― I'll make it a quick one. Shouldn't take long, I promise. So ― learning about sustainable chicken farms, pastured meat CSAs, and the horrors of industrial poultry production has been fascinating and all, but I think we all really need some answers ― one, specifically ― to a very important question: Which do you think came first, the chicken or the egg?"

If you're looking to shed light on the storied causality dilemma that has intrigued philosophers, scientists, and preschoolers for a few thousand years, the week of April 19 would be a good time to do so. Local food folks will have chickens (and their smooth shelled offspring) on the brain. You might remember Carole Morison from the documentary Food, Inc. She's the Maryland chicken farmer who blew the whistle on Perdue's vile rearing condition requirements. She's coming to the Bay Area that week to appear at a number of events, including several involving Alexis Koefoed of saintly chicken purveyor Soul Food Farm. The Vacaville operation ― as cuddly and conscientious as Perdue is massive, inhumane, and bottom line-driven ― was ravaged by a fire in September, but has survived, thanks, in no small part, to vigilant local support for its products and practices. Apparently, Morison visited Soul Food Farm a few months ago and saw, for the first time, happy plump birds waddling through sun-drenched fields, pecking gleefully at bugs and grass.
