'Where Can I Meet the Ladies?'

Last week, I received this question from T. S.:
Hey, know of any restaurants where I can meet a lot of women?
Well, T.S., I don't do a lot of hunting for female company of the kind you're looking for, but I do have a few suggestions for lady-lovers of all stripes:

1. Pickling, jamming, and cheese-making classes Although urban homesteading classes are mixed, the gender balance usually skews feminine, attracting both straight and gay women. The Institute of Urban Homesteading in Oakland has a bunch of classes. So does 18 Reasons.

A few weeks ago, I stopped by an event where everyone brought in food

projects to share, and the ratio of women to men was 8:2. A

couple of straight guys brought bread they'd baked, and they were mobbed.

2. Smuggler's Cove Rum connoisseurship programs and tropical-shipwreck decor seem

like they could appeal to flip-flop-wearing dudes, but Martin Cate's

fruit- and ice-filled drinks go down awfully smoothly, and the glasses are garnished with

orchids. A friend recently reported back that the room was thick with estrogen.

3. Parea

I sent out a call to my coworkers for other suggestions, and one mentioned

this Mission wine bar and Mediterranean restaurant. "Not sure why," she wrote. "Pretty women, too,

ahem." In general, I'm thinking any bar where you can actually sit and

talk might be a good place to sit and talk to women you don't know.

A no-go would have to be British-style tea rooms like Lovejoy's Tea Room and the Secret Garden.

While they may just be the most feminine dining spaces in the country, they're

magnets for groups, and the age range goes all the way from princess

parties

to Red Hat Society outings. Try cruising Candybar instead.
