Street-food vendors will focus on potatoes this weekend in a fundraiser for the after-school Beacon Culinary Project in the Western Addition, where Roger Feely (Soul Cocina) and Brian Kimball (Magic Curry Kart) are instructors. For the First Annual Great Potato Sack Race, Feely and carts such as Mali Num Num Treats, Gumbo Cart, Lumpia Cart, Pot Pie Junkie, Sweet Constructions, and Dezy's Drinks will have an array of snacks for sale, many of them some form of potato creation. The race's winner will receive free food at the after-party (held at nearby La Victoria Bakery) and the chance to win a cooking class from Feely's instructional project, Jharna's Kitchen.

Vendors will bring as many potato (or coffee) sacks as they can find, but it's probably a good idea to bring one of your own if you plan to compete. Feely is also asking for donations of new kitchen implements for the Beacon Culinary Project; contact him through his website if you have something to give.
