"We have a small kitchen that we haven't utilized properly, so I wanted to invite local food-cart operators ― or chefs ― to come in and utilize it for free," Turgut said. Early in the day, the market at 205 Frederick (at Downey) serves Ritual coffee and sandwiches from its mini deli, but after 2 p.m., things go idle. Turgut figures that interesting cart vendors could generate a little business. Plus, he says, it could be cool for the neighborhood.
Turgut, who's owned Ashbury Market for three years, says neighbors first broached the idea of luring street-food vendors to the mostly residential area. In recent months, more than one Mission food business has turned its kitchen into a commissary for small vendors. Turgut's idea would be unique in that vendors would operate rent free.
Meanwhile, Turgut has launched a new delivery service at Ashbury Market called UrbanFresh, featuring free grocery drop-offs anywhere in the city. He says he'd like to offer more locally made foods. The UrbanFresh site invites small entrepreneurs ― what it calls "seasoned" chefs and home cooks alike ― to sell their products via Ashbury.
