Maybe there's something character-building about enduring the lines outdoors at Ferry Plaza for Richie Nakano's ramen, maybe not. You'll have a chance to ponder that as you slurp, seated ― indoors ― tonight and again on Dec. 27, when Nakano brings his Hapa Ramen Monday pop-up back to Bar Tartine. Tonight's menu includes ramen, for sure; also Dungeness crab rice noodles with fish sauce, Korean-style fried chicken with yuzu, and root vegetables with ras el hanout (all appetizers clock in under the $10 mark). Make phone reservations (see below), or just show up.

Hapa Ramen Pop-Up

When: Tonight, Dec. 20, 6-10 p.m. (also Mon., Dec. 27)

Where: Bar Tartine, 561 Valencia (at 16th St.)

Reservations: 684-2779; walk-ins accepted

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
