The rundown: Like most things you do at the library, this event is sure to boost your inner peace a few decibels. At a free Saturday workshop, you will listen to traditional Japanese music while methodically pounding on soft, sticky mochi with a mallet. It's part of the ancient art of mochitsuki (aka rice-cake making), a fading practice in the age of pre-packaged, prepared everything. The workshop is staged by Kagami Kai, a single-minded group of mochi enthusiasts dedicated to spreading the art and love of their favorite food. They will teach you how to pound it out, then you will eat the fruits of your labor. These rice cakes are often served with sauces, sweet stuffing, or seaweed; no word on whether you'll be so lucky tomorrow.
