Our latest obsession with waffles has reached a fever pitch. We're up all hours, roaming unsavory streets in search of our next fix. If that didn't sound right, it's because it's not. Thankfully, our early morning cravings recently landed us at Little Bird Coffeehouse, home of the Gluten-Free Blue Corn Waffles. They come topped with fresh fruit, maple syrup, and butter (or delicious Earth Balance), and they're ridiculously tasty. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, they're everything a waffle should be, with the added bonus of appearing somewhat healthy. That's a good thing because with Oprah going off the air today, we now must rely solely upon ourselves to make good decisions. Dark Days, people.
In addition to the glorious waffles, Little Bird has been churning out your new favorite unconventional breakfasts -- think enormous organic yogurt parfaits and tremendous vegan breakfast sandwiches made with soyrizo -- since earlier this year, and we're into all of it. And since it's helmed by the owners of Whiskey Thieves, you know they pay attention to their beverages, too. The almond milk latte we enjoyed on our last visit was the best we've ever had. And we know some almond milk lattes, okay?
The space is adorably ramshackle, with mismatched tables and chairs. It's as if the orphans from Annie were given a decorating budget. Describing the clientele is why the word "hipster" was (obnoxiously) coined, with various degrees of miner bros inhabiting every table. Don't be scared, these people are your friends, and this food is delicious.
