The San Francisco restaurant scene is rife with restaurant cookbooks these days, with what seems like every popular chef and restaurateur working on a collection of favorite recipes. There are so many wonderful books about local food, that it is becoming harder to choose which ones to buy. Part grocery buying guide, part cookbook, Eat Good Food, a go-to local food encyclopedia, should be on the top of the list for you and all your food geek friends.

"Creating Community Through Food," the first chapter, provides a history of Bi-Rite and helpful guidelines on how to shop for food while looking out for the health of the planet, the local economy, and your own well being. Subsequent chapters read as a guide to shopping for the best ingredients, no matter where you live.

The bulk of the book is separated into sections based on the various store departments: grocery, deli, produce, butcher counter, dairy, cheese, bakery, and wine/beer. Each chapter is further broken down by tips on food shopping, storage, and preparation - including recipes for customer favorites and unique ways to prepare the items found on the store shelves.

Spotlights on local purveyors like Saint Benoit, Katz, and Mariquita Farms emphasize the close-knit Bay Area food community and the importance of knowing where the food we eat actually comes from.

The only thing missing is a section on ice cream from Bi-Rite Creamery, which will come later in Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones: 80 Recipes for Making Your Own Ice Cream and Frozen Treats, due out in April 2012.
