Debbie Horn is probably the coolest woman we have never met. Two months ago, she convinced her friend and owner of Escape From New York Pizza on Bush Street to transform his pizza parlor to a nighttime pop-up bar, called After Hours Bar.

Horn constructed a bar around the counter of the pizza place and started a batch of homemade sangria to serve to her group of friends.

Guests started calling it King Kong Bar in honor of the restaurant's decor, which features a gorilla hanging over a massive skyscraper. Horn stands beneath it while mixing her "really cheap" drinks ($3 to $4 wells). A few weeks after opening, Horn accepted the inevitable, and started calling it King Kong Bar, too.

Now at 6 p.m. every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Escape From

New York's new happy hour ends ($2.50 draft beers), and the King Kong

Bar opens. "This inter-exchange of business is like a pecking bird on an

elephant's back," said Horn.

What used to feed Horn's dinner party guests is now served as the

King Kong Bar's homemade snacks: bruschetta, spicy wings, Italian

potatoes, and spinach-artichoke dip with chips. Guests find something new at King Kong Bar every night. It has hosted karaoke, poetry readings, art showings, and bands, all booked through Horn's friends or word of mouth.

Some upcoming events: On Saturday, Feb. 18, King Kong Bar is offering a DIY Drink

Marker's Workshop, hosted by Horn's friend, Amelia Strader. From 7 to 9 p.m., guests will learn how to make drink markers that double as coasters. All materials are provided for free.

For more information on the workshop, go here. Visit King Kong Bar on Facebook.
