The New Cako Creamery Means Artisanal Ice Cream Is Smack Dab in the Metreon

The Metreon's ongoing renovation is making space for local chains and a few new vendors in the heart of downtown. One of the newest and most welcome is Cako Creamery, the new artisan ice cream venture from cupcake specialist Cako Bakery.

The shop is tucked in a nook on the righthand side inside the main entrance. (Its twin sister, the cupcake part of the business, operates on the left side nook.) This is the only free standing Cako Creamery booth at any of Cako's locations, and according to the staff there are no immediate plans to add solo ice cream stands at the Valley Fair Mall or the Solano shopping mall locations.

Cako owners -- Tina Choy and her partners - set out to design ice cream flavors inspired by some of their most popular cupcakes, all made with quality organic ingredients and crafted in small batches with milk from Straus Family Creamery.

This last week, when we popped by the Metreon, rain and cold weather doesn't seem to deter customers indulging their sweet tooth. Neither did the $3-$5.50 price, for one to three scoops. (A waffle cone costs 50 cents extra). Children and couples seem specially susceptible.

SFoodie sampled a few flavors like Apple Pie (with pie filling and streusel crumbs) and vanilla infused with Thai Tea before choosing a scoop of Trifecta ---chocolate ice cream, fudge, and chocolate cake. The rich, creamy texture, accented by small chocolatey morsels of dense cake and fudge, makes it worth the calories, and the portion won't make you feel guilty afterward. At last, real reasons to go to the mall.
