This tiny bakery in the Outer Sunset is known for its Sunday beignets, donut muffins, and brownies, but don't overlook the silver-dollar-size alfajores.

This Latin American sandwich cookie has regional variations, but it's typical to have almonds somewhere in the mix and to see the whole thing doused in a bomb of powdered sugar that's carefully calibrated to go off on your shirt on the first bite. The variety at Devil's Teeth Baking Company has neither, instead showing off generous chunks of pecan inside the shortbread. The cookies are joined by a pat of dulce de leche (caramelized condensed milk).

There's no shame when ordering in a botched accent that makes the cookie sound like alpha whores; Cook E. Monster has never pretended to be anything but a heathen. Order four.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
