Score Bargain Cookbooks at the Library's Big Book Sale

Hey fellow cookbook obsessives, you should go to the 48th Annual Big Book Sale at Fort Mason put on by Friends of the San Francisco Public Library. The sale started today in the hanger-like Festival Pavilion and will continue through the weekend, and there are two huge tables of all manner of cookery and food books just waiting for you to buy them on the cheap (every book is $3 or less).

We just got back, and there were still bargains to be had -- we spotted several copies of Craig Claiborne's New York Times Cookbook, a few Moosewoods and Silver Palates, and almost an entire set of the Time Life series cookbooks, which we showed admirable restraint in not snatching up (you're welcome). There was also a fair amount of food writing collections and books by Ruth Reichl, Jeffrey Steingarten, Jane & Michael Stern, and the like.

Maybe the best part, though, is the esoterica. We spotted the Marlboro's cookbook for men (the contents didn't live up to the cover, unfortch), a zillion editions of the Microwave Gourmet, single-ingredient cookbooks for the likes of artichokes and bananas, and many self-published recipe collections from women's groups, including this sweet and terribly sad booklet someone made to honor their late mother:

The sale's going on until 6 p.m., and is open tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They're still bringing out books, ensuring fresh stock, but if you're the gambling type, on Sunday all books will be $1. Oh yeah, and it's not just cookbooks -- the sale covers pretty much every category under the sun.
