All through December, SFoodie is bringing you local gift ideas for the food obsessives in your life.

Not only is print still alive, three of the most compelling food magazines in the country are published right here in the Bay Area. A subscription to Meatpaper ($28 for four issues) and/or Lucky Peach ($28 for six issues), or Gastronomica ($50 for four issues) is a thoughtful gift that keeps on giving all year. The current issue of the quarterly Meatpaper, a perfect-bound journal dedicated to edible flesh, centers on seafood and is called the "Fissue." Meanwhile, Lucky Peach, the brainchild of New York chef David Chang of Momofuku, is exploring Chinatowns in the latest release and Gastronomica is celebrating the bounty of fall.

These titles are artsy, intellectual, and irreverent -- no retreads of the mainstream food stories you might encounter in the checkout aisle at the grocery store. And with in-depth stories, each issue lasts a reader a long time and feels worthy to save in a collection.
