This coming week will be all about the sudsy, fermented-grain goodness of beer. Beer will be paired with everything, and will find its way into your food, your candy, and your cocktails. Even better, it'll find its way into you.
Here are our picks for some of the more bar-driven events of the week.
Anderson Valley Beer Mixology with Michael Cecconi:
Where: Two Sisters Bar & Books, 579 Hayes, S.F. 863-3655 When: Feb. 9, 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Cost: $45 (buy tickets online)
The Rundown: Join bar manager and Chron Bar Star Michael Cecconi and Anderson Valley Brewing Company for a unique event to learn to mix with beer. The class starts with a tasting of four of the company's beers, followed by a hands-on session where you'll get a chance to mix up four full-sized cocktails. For the love of god, eat a huge lunch before the class. If you can't make it, the cocktails will be available at the bar all week long.
Crispin Cider Cocktails
Where: The Rock Bar, 80 29th St., 550-6664
When: Feb. 9, 7 to 10 p.m.
The Rundown: Get Rock Bar hard (cider that is) with cocktails made using Crispin Apple Cider. The folks from Crispin will be on hand to answer all your questions and raise a glass with you of drinks like Crispin Applejack Old Fashioneds and Hard Cider Sidecars. Mr. Internet Famous will spin '80s hits, so bring some comfortable shoes.
"Payback" is a Bitch Valentine's Cocktails
Where: Elixir Saloon, 3200 16th St., 552-1633
When: Feb. 14, 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The Rundown: Speakeasy Payback Porter will be highlighted in this Valentine's-themed cocktail menu advertised for lovers and haters (though I can't say I've ever experienced the good kind of payback). Go have a few and remember that drunk-calling or -texting someone to tell them you're over them is not payback, but meeting someone new is.
Beer Cocktails and Barbary Brix Caramels
Where: Blackbird, 2124 Market, 503-0630
When: Feb. 14, 6 to 10 p.m.
The Rundown: If you're lucky in love or just have a sweet tooth, join the caramel and beer party with Barbary Brix, who will have a selection of sweets available ($10 for quarter-pound box), but also has made a custom syrup for The Bitter Monk ($8 Strubbe's Flemish Red, Cardamarro, Barbary Brix apple syrup, lemon, black pepper, orange zest). Other drinks on the special Beer Week menu include the My Clementine ($8 Timmermans Raspberry Framboise, orange-infused vodka, grapefruit juice, honey syrup) and an explosive Blackbird Car Bomb ($8 Devils Canyon Dedicated Amber Ale, Evan Williams Single Barrel, root liquor, vanilla).
Third Annual Booze and Brew Brawl:
Where: 15 Romolo, 15 Romolo (at Broadway), 398-1359
When: Feb. 17, 6 to 10 p.m.
Cost: $35 (buy tickets online)
The Rundown: Come cheer on your favorite bartenders as they compete for best beer cocktails using ingredients from Campari America and San Francisco's Speakeasy Brewery. Ticket price includes a welcome cocktail, tastes from all the competitors, and grub from a special menu from chef Justin Deering.
Happening all week long:
If you're not really the planning type, Delarosa features beer-and-shot combos like Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale and Balcones Brimstone Texas Scrub Oak Smoked Corn Whiskey, Shmaltz Lenny's R.I.P.A. and Absinthe Obsello Verde, and Lost Abbey Judgment Day with amaro nonino. ThirstyBear Brewing Company has beer cocktails all week long like the Just a Little Wit (Aqua Perfecta Pear Liqueur, Qi White, Cocchi Americano, Valencia Wheat) or a Liquid Smoke (peaty scotch, Qi Black Lapsang Souchong Tea Liqueur, Mexican molé bitters, Koslov Stout). Celebrate Strong Beer Month and Beer Week at the same time at Social Kitchen and Brewery with beertails like variations on their Belgian Sour (beer, bourbon, muddled orange, house-made ginger syrup).
