Pastry chef Michelle Polzine has been trying to open 20th Century Café in a converted laundromat at Oak and Gough (across the street from Rich Table) for a while -- we wrote recently about the pop-up bake sales she was holding at State Bird Provisions every Sunday. Now she's looking for Kickstarter dollars to fund the buildout of her new spot, which will draw its inspiration from vintage cookbooks and visits to the café-rich cities of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.

The bake sales featured treats like knishes, rugelach, date turnovers, rhubarb tarts, and more, showing Polzine's influences from both Eastern European baking traditions and the wide range of California produce.

The Kickstarter page has more details about the café, but the real draw there is the sepia-toned, 1930's/40's video showing Polzine's trials and tribulations getting the place open. It's a fun watch that encapsulates the vintage feel she's trying to create in her café:

Giveaways for donations include free pastries and jars of preserves, a brass plaque on the new hood giving cred, and cooking classes with Polzine. If all goes well, expect the café to be open in June, just in time for summer produce.
