Brian Kimball of Magic Curry Kart and Roger Feely of Soul Cocina are bonded by more than the love of good street food; they were also born on the same day. The two have pushed the boundaries of what chefs without restaurants can do. Kimball teaches cooking classes and has his own line of curry pastes and chili sauces that are distributed throughout Northern California, while Feely cooks up elaborate meals for home delivery via Luke's Local and organizes events that mingle food and music. Next Friday (June 21), they'll host Back Alley Jubilee on June 21, a Burmese-centric street food meal held in a secret location somewhere between the Bay Bridge and Sutro Tower.

Magic Curry Kart's Latest Special: Panties

The full menu is still in progress but will include khoa suey, parcels of Burmese tea leaf salad, and spicy samosas. People can indicate whether they'd like vegan or vegetarian options when purchasing tickets ($35).

The event is secret, but it won't be silent. Local singer Micropixie and electric guitar experimentalist the Genie will provide sonic ambience.

Four years after Magic Curry Kart and Soul Cocina made their debuts in a back alley of the Mission, the ideas are arriving full circle.

  • Phish at the Bill Graham Auditorium
Phish is in the midst of a block of sold out shows at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (October 27-29). The Monday night concert featured a rare first set opener of “Walfredo” with the band members switching instruments for the song. The evening’s highlights included John Fishman and his iconic vacuum cleaner solo and favorites such as Chalk Dust Torture, Slave to the Traffic Light, Axilla, Rift, 2001 Space Odyssey, and Maze. The show also featured Phish’s debut of a, seemingly impromptu, version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to with roaring approval of the, singing along, crowd. With Game 6 being tonight, partying Phish fans will join Giants fans in Civic Center Plaza where there will be a World Series viewing party on a large screen set up by the City.
