If you've ever lingered over a plate of Japanese fare and wondered what it would be like to eat, travel, and live there, a free Friday event at the Women's Building may help rev up your wanderlust. Food writer Matthew Amster-Burton, author of the book, Pretty Good Number One, will be talking Tokyo, pickles, and more.

Amster-Burton told SFoodie that Pretty Good Number One is "about the pleasures of living and eating in Tokyo. Japan has probably the second most sophisticated array of pickles after Korea. Japanese pickles encompass dozens of vegetables and range from lightly salted to highly complex, aromatic, and long-fermented items made with miso, rice bran, soy sauce, or sake lees."

He will be joined by local food expert Karen Solomon, author of Asian Pickles Japan, Asian Pickles Korea, Asian Pickles China and Asian Pickles India, as well as Jam It Pickle It Cure It. We love her expertise and she is a familiar presence in the Mission District and at food events (her trademark look often includes fabulous hair in shades ranging from purple to pink and beyond). Solomon will talk about Japanese pickle-making and her brief stint living in Japan.

The best events have good food ideas and treats, and this one delivers: Solomon will serve some tastes of homemade Japanese pickles. Should the mood strike for post-event Japanese food & related conversation strike, Izakaya Yuzuki is a few hops and skips down the road, at 18th and Guerrero.
