On Friday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Services announced that 58,240 pounds of ground beef intended for the National School Lunch Program contained small pieces of plastic in some of the packages.
Thank god that officials from the San Francisco Unified School District have confirmed that none of the recalled beef intended for federal feeding programs has been sent to any of the district's 114 schools.
The ground beef product that was packaged this April were shipped to distribution centers in California, Arkansas, Texas, and Montana. No illnesses have been reported. Zetta Reicker, Interim Director of Student Nutrition Services says that the SFUSD doesn't receive any raw beef from the USDA.
"We don't have the facilities to cook it in," Reicker says.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the products subject to recall include 40-pound cases containing 10-pound chubs of "Fine Ground Beef" bearing the establishment number Est. 6063A inside the USDA Mark of Inspection. The products were produced on April 1 and can be further identified by case codes 6063A3091A or 6063A3091B.
Central Valley Meat Company was shut down for about a month in August of last year after videos were released revealing graphic images of animal cruelty. Following the release of the videos, the company was suspended from providing meat to federal food programs, including the National School Lunch Program. Just weeks later, the USDA again began purchasing beef from Central Valley Meat Company for federal feeding programs.
Records show that between Oct. 1, 2010 and Sept. 30, 2011, the USDA purchased more than 21 million pounds of beef from Central Valley Meat Company.
