Amazon confirmed today that it has launched its grocery delivery service in San Francisco, as we speculated earlier in the week after seeing the delivery vans about town. Customers can now sign up for Amazon Prime Fresh, a $299-a-year program that includes membership to Amazon Prime and access to grocery delivery (you can try it out now with a 30-day free trial in select zip codes).

AmazonFresh offers same-day grocery delivery on orders of more than $35, which you can bundle with books, electronics, and 500,000 more items from the Amazon warehouses. Orders placed by 10 a.m. arrive "by dinner," orders placed by 10 p.m. arrive "by breakfast."

The online supermarket also includes an area called "SF Spotlight" that highlights a number of local food producers and restaurants. Order coffee from Philz, bagels from Beauty's, meat from Avedano's, seafood from the San Francisco Fish Company, pasta from Baia, and more, along with readymade meals from restaurants like Homeroom, Rosamunde, and Curry Up Now.

We'll be monitoring to see how AmazonFresh stacks up with local grocery delivery service Good Eggs -- and if it can keep itself from repeating the mistakes of Webvan a decade ago. If you have experience with it, let us know in the comments or email food editor Anna Roth.
