New Company Claims to Make Artisanal Salami Out of Celebrities

Posted By on Fri, Feb 28, 2014 at 10:30 AM

The weirdest story on the Internet yesterday goes to the new company Bite Labs, which is purportedly making salumi out of celebrities. That's right: They propose to harvest cells from famous people like James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kanye West, then mix those cells with animal meat to make salami. The website has a detailed breakdown of the process by which they plan to turn your favorite celebs into sausage, and the company CEO has responded earnestly to emails from Vice and Slate. Someone's taking this prank pretty far.

The stunt is getting quite a bit of attention. Many have turned to Twitter under the hashtag #EatCelebrityMeat (cute, right?) to express their disgust, laugh at the joke, or beg their favorite celebrities to submit their cells to culinary science. Lawrence, Kanye, and Franco seem to be the favorites.

And yeah, the whole thing is probably a boring commentary on the nature of celebrity or the ethics of meat-eating or maybe just a really great viral campaign for a new artisanal salami company -- we don't really care and will be inevitably disappointed when the company decides to draw back the curtain. For now we're just going to content ourselves with being amused by flavor tests on the company's Tumblr, like this one for James Franco, a blend of venison, lavender, and caramelized onion (he would be so complicated and fancy).

What celebrity would you like to see immortalized in sausage?
