Much of the time, the brewing industry is erroneously referred to as a "fraternity." We agree with part of the sentiment -- beer folks tend to be a tight-knit community rooted in cooperative spirit. A good chunk of that kinship character is rooted in a David and Goliath-esque struggle against the Buds, Millers, and Coors of the world. But, the word "fraternity" ignores the fact that an increasing number of women (be them brewers, brewery owners, writers, salespeople, business minds and the like) are also guiding the direction of the industry. This week's featured beer is a reminder that some of our best brewing talent resides with the fairer sex.

The Pink Boots Society collectively represents 854 female talents in the brewing world. Each member earns at least part of their income from within the beer industry. Abandon all preconceived notions of the stereotypical brewer -- when these ladies are in the brewhouse you'll see pink steel-toed boots and nary a beard in sight.

In celebration of International Women's Day, Pink Boots chapters from around the globe have come together to create a collaborative brew called Unite Pale Ale. The Bay Area chapter of the organization (one of 60 participating groups) rallied at Drake's Brewing to brew their version of the 4 percent ABV session pale ale. Every version of the brew utilized a widely available hop (Cascade), and the Bay Area gals upped the ante with El Dorado and Citra dry-hopping to create a dry, quenching beer with aromas of orange rind and grapefruit. Additionally, proceeds from the beer will be donated to support brewing scholarships for women.

Unite Pale ale will be available on draft at a handful of select destinations. Check out the events below, where you can slake your thirst while chatting with some particularly lovely brewers:

Friday, March 14: Beer Revolution @ 6 p.m.

Saturday, March 15: Original Gravity @ noon

Tuesday, March 25: Amsterdam Cafe @ 6 p,m,

Saturday, March 29: Albany Taproom @ 6 p.m.
