Food halls: So hot right now. Instead of anchoring a new building with one or two businesses, more and more developers are putting Ferry Building-style food halls on the ground floor featuring several small, local vendors. The latest comes in the base of fancy new condos being developed at 2175 Market (at 15th), and just had the Planning Commission sign off on its proposal for about 4,000 square feet of mixed food retail.
It wasn't so long ago that the Ferry Building was the only game in town, but that's changing fast. There's a 22,000 square foot market going into the base of the Twitter building later this year. Second Act Marketplace in the Haight got a lot of good buzz when it opened last fall, and 331 Cortland continues to spawn alums including Ichi Sushi and Bernal Cutlery.
The biggest deal of them all might turn out to be Ghirardelli Square, which was acquired in October by Jamestown Properties, which also owns New York's Chelsea Market and Atlanta's Ponce City Market. Anyone up for an F-line food crawl in a year or two?
