Papalote's Soulrrito Returns This Saturday, with Fried Chicken

The trend of San Franciscans waiting in incredibly long lines for food shows no sign of abating anytime soon. This city is the world capital of foodie abundance, yet at times resembles Soviet Moscow after a grain harvest failed -- but only if the sought-after item is a mash-up, with bonus queues if mac and cheese is involved.

If you missed last Saturday's Soulrrito at Papalote Mexican Grill, if you were deprived of yams and collard greens plus mac and cheese with either tri-tip or soyrizo, there is redemption this Saturday. As Tamara Palmer noted in the Bold Italic, slightly different formulation (with fried chicken!) is coming, and instead of a mere 60 soulrritos, Papalote's Pam "The Funkstress" Warren and Miguel Escobedo are preparing to churn out 180 of them, still priced at $11.25 for the meat, $9.10 for the fake meat.

If you should find yourself 181st in line, anxiously counting and re-counting and hoping somebody ahead of you gets an asthma attack or learns about a better, longer line somewhere else, be aware that soulrritos will be available full-time at Warren's Picadilly Catering Express in Foster City starting June 9. Small consolation, maybe, but considering how good Papalote is and how people will camp out just to get a McRib, the soulrrito is bound to retain its flash-mob cult following.

Gimmicky? Yes. Gentrification's third horseman? No. Inauthentic? Who cares, as long as it tastes good! And to all the Twittererati complaining about the obscene non-availability of breakfast tacos, hey, at least these aren't day-olds, flown in from someplace else.
