It's no surprise that some of the best burritos can be found in California - what's even less surprising is that the best of the best are from San Francisco.

Founder and Editor in Chief of FiveThirtyEight and self-proclaimed burritophile, Nate Silver, has gathered a committee that's sole goal is to find the best burrito in America.

Having already done so on the much smaller scale of Chicago in 2007, Silver came up with a Moneyball/baseball-inspired system that draws its stats from review site Yelp.

To make this fair, he's also split the country into four categories - California, west, south, and northeast - with each region showcasing 16 burritos, making for 64 contenders in total. The burritos will be ranked on a bracket system, similar to that of the NCAA basketball tournament. The bracket has yet to be published.

Journalist Anna Barry-Jester will be living out the dream as the travelling, burrito taste tester. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, vegan or carne asada, stuffed with kimchi or fries (or even both?), Barry-Jester is on the hunt.

As the top rated burrito joint, according to Silver, San Francisco's own El Farolito will be put to the test. The establishment was also dubbed as "the most life changing burrito in America" by Esquire last year.

HRD Coffee Shop and Taqueria Cancun are also on the top 20 list.

Other contenders include burritos from Maine, Idaho, Iowa, Florida, and Hawaii.

Whether or not Silver and his teams finds the country's best burrito in the city, we can agree that San Francisco will always be burrito central and no one can tell us otherwise.
