The Affogato, an Italian dessert beverage consisting of ice cream topped with a shot of an espresso, is high on my list of Italy’s top culinary contributions to the world. It’s also on my list of things to eat this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday three local artisans, Marlo’s Bakeshop, Nomadic Ground, and Bootleg Creamery, will be popping up together in Oakland and San Francisco with a menu of ice cream and biscotti affogato combos called Affogato Madness.

Expect three flavor combos at $5 each. The menu features a classic affogato with vanilla ice cream, Bolivian coffee, and Marlo’s signature biscotti; a more decadent version with chocolate ice cream, French roast coffee, and chocolate-espresso “midnight” biscotti; and of course, a gluten-free combo of salted caramel ice cream, Guatemalan coffee, and banana bread biscotti.

“The idea was born from a collaboration with Bootleg Creamery a couple weeks ago when we created an ice cream flavor based on my midnight cookie,” says Marlo Gertz, founder of Marlo’s Bakeshop. Bootleg Creamery came up with a cappuccino crunch flavor, inspiring more coffee-related brainstorming. Gertz roped in Nomadic Ground, a micro-roaster based in SOMA. “Considering San Francisco weather it seemed like the perfect blend of hot and cold,” says Gertz.

The three companies all launched in the past two years and they’re each a little offbeat. Gertz started her cookie business inspired by her grandmother’s soft-baked biscotti recipe and is steadily making her way into cafes and local retailers. You may recognize the Nomadic Ground logo from owner Thomas Landry’s pushcart, which he uses to serve coffee and interview people for podcasts posted on his website. Bootleg Creamery, based in Berkeley, creates new flavors every Monday which are only available for delivery or pick-up.

Affogato Madness:
Saturday, 3-6 p.m. at La Movida Wine Bar

Sunday, 1-3 p.m. at Oaktown Spice Shop
Ice cream, coffee, and biscotti will also be available to purchase.

Sidenote: Pal’s Takeaway (open Monday through Friday) will be moving out of La Movida on August 8th, so you may want to hit up La Movida twice this week!
