Last Weekend's Eat Drink SF: Bigger is Better

The ambiance, décor, and setup felt similar to that of previous years’: from the wooden framed cocktail stations to the chalkboard signage placed in front of potted plants for the restaurants, it felt familiar. But one thing was noticeably different: the space was huge. In fact, Fort Mason boasts over two times the square footage of the Union Square tents, allowing for not only more vendors, but also more breathing and elbow room (which is extremely important when you’re downing your 29th tasting). There was never a point at which I was waiting for food or a beverage.
And speaking of food—there was a lot of it. Over 32 unique bites from restaurants like Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen, who did a Pastrami “SPAM” over rye, or Dirty Habit who did a pasta with foie gras Madeira sauce (apparently legal because they were not selling it and because Fort Mason is on a national park under federal jurisdiction and therefore exempt from the statewide ban).
But the best bite I had was the lamb gyros from Souvla. It wasn’t anything opulent — there was no foie gras sauce or caviar. It was just an honest, cute little mini version of what they offer in their [newish] Hayes Valley spot. Good food, done well.

For the last five years, SF Chefs would shut down and tent up Union Square for its weekend long food festival — the one that usually kicks off food festival season in the city. But this year, the festival rebranded as Eat Drink SF and moved its location to Fort Mason. We were there last Saturday to check out the new stomping grounds.
