With the biggest, baddest, grub-slinging-est street food festival rolling into Folsom Street this Saturday, La Cocina kicks off the celebration this Friday with an eleven-chef tour of fried chicken the night before. The name, Friday Night Fried Chicken Family Meal, is as big a mouthful as some of the dishes being advertised from an impressive roster of long distance, as well as local, chefs.

The event includes southern style fried chicken from Alabama-based Jim n' Nick's, to Brazilian style chicken (and no, that doesn’t refer to how the bird's plumage was plucked) from Sao Paolo, Brazil-based Feirinha Gastronomica with wandering chefs Daniela Narciso & Mauricio Shuartz.

The local list of chefs includes a few restaurants, but not just standard stuff: Starbelly’s constantly sold-out fried chicken night goodies will be fresh from the fryer, Abura-Ya’s Japanese style karaage pops-up here, and the now closed To Hyang makes a special appearance with Korean fried chicken. The Whole Beast will of course cook up whole birds, and we are also looking forward to the amazing stuff Traci des Jardins of Jardiniere will serve up this year (at the Night Markets of years past, her and her crew always blew me away).

There will even be a vegan option from the upcoming Citizen Fox who will serve up “fried chicken,” which you should certainly give shot. Never underestimate a fryer's ability to bestow deliciousness on lowly vegetables.

You can't have a family meal without sides and Friday night there will be plenty to chose like Starbelly chef Adam Timney's jalapeño cornbread and Baia Pasta’s ridiculously creamy macaroni and cheese made with their organic pasta. All eleven chefs will feature a side to go along with their chicken dish.

Pace yourself, but if you don't, dance a little of it down with some of the live music, then head over to grab a scoop of the special bourbon pecan flavor of ice cream for dessert from Three Twins Ice Cream, a custom flavor available only on this night.

All that crispy food will make you thirsty, and entry includes a couple of drinks from either Rye on The Road (stirring up trouble with Old Fashioneds and Aperol Spritzes) or fresh suds from Calicraft Brewing. Each ticket entry comes with drink tokens and a mason jar in which to enjoy your beverages. Even better, at the end of the night upon leaving, you will be handed a flask, which sadly, you may not fill with chicken.

The proceeds from this terrific night benefit local charity La Cocina, who’s mission is to help small food based business grow (making the Bay Area a more delicious place to be). If you're feeling lucky, buy a few raffle tickets and hope you win the trip to Nashville for even more fried chicken or other edible prizes. How cool is that?
