There's a Benefit for Former Drakes Bay Oyster Company Employees This Sunday

Following a lengthy legal battle, Drakes Bay Oyster Company closed its doors on July 31 — and some members of the Marin community are worried about the welfare of the company's three dozen-odd former employees. Inside Scoop reports that a fundraiser will be held at Sausalito's Fish restaurant, organized by owner Bill Foss and Drakes manager Loretta Murphy with help from Stag Dining, Fine & Rare, and the Carneros Wine Alliance. 

Many of the employees lived on the property and had been working there for several decades. it's a sad side effect of the closure of the local oyster farm and cannery at the behest of the National Park Service to make the land into marine wilderness. Because of high rents in West Marin and elsewhere, many are concerned that the farm workers will have a hard time finding another place to live. Though the farm is still harvesting oysters for now, retail operations have ceased.

Here's what your $75 ticket will get you, besides contributing to peace of mind of displaced employees:

BBQ oysters with crispy chicken skin, red hot sauce and celery leaf
Broiled Oyster Dynamite with shrimp, togarashi, ginger and Japanese herbs
Smoked oyster and beef tartare with pickled watermelon, dehydrated tomato and onion rings
Oyster gumbo with Andouille sausage and heirloom peppers
Oyster po’boy sliders on a brioche bun with jalapeño slaw and local tomatoes
