It's an open secret that you can hang out with your dog in certain bars and restaurants in San Francisco, but technically even letting a dog onto a patio has been illegal this whole time. Not anymore! On Thursday, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law that overturned a previous ban on pets in restaurants. It will go into effect Jan. 1, 2015.

The impetuous behind this legislation wasn't some huge pro-pooch movement, but rather to clear up any confusion since so many people were ignoring the ban anyway, according to Democratic Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada who pushed it through.

Restaurants aren't required to let dogs on their patio, either; they just no longer run the risk of citation if they decide to allow pet owners to enjoy the company of their furry friends during brunch or an afternoon snack and apertif. Whether this will usher in a new era of dog cafes, a la Hayes Valley's upcoming cat cafe, remains to be seen.
