It's basic economics: Markets are naturally regulated by supply and demand. If a product has a small supply, but huge demand, expect things to get a little crazy.

New Zealand foodies are suffering through such an economical ordeal, due to the incredible popularity of Lewis Road Creamery's Chocolate Milk. The creamery began producing chocolate milk nearly a month ago, as a supplement to its already acclaimed butter and regular milk, and was almost immediately overwhelmed by the sheer demand for the drink.

Autumn turns a touch sweeter as Hudson Whiskey sets to release a supremely limited batch of their Maple Cask Rye throughout the Bay Area.

The slightly caramelized notes of this particular expression come courtesy of careful aging in maple-cured oak barrels. A unique marriage of two of America's most classic craft offerings, the product was created after a syrup-tapper from the Hudson Valley of upstate New York approached their neighboring distillery in search of whiskey casks.

The Moosewood Cookbook Marks 40 Years in Print with New Edition

When something is as familiar – and splatter stained – as the original Moosewood Cookbook, admittedly, it’s hard to look at it with new eyes. But a 40th anniversary edition is out from Ten Speed Press, the same Berkeley outfit which first nationally distributed the hand-collated notebook that a young Mollie Katzen – who has now been an East Bay resident for decades – kept mostly in her car.

For those who didn’t grow up with the Moosewood Cookbook, it all began in a restaurant in Ithaca, N.Y., that served homey vegetarian cuisine cooked by non-professional chefs, bringing in modified versions of their old family recipes.

Before Deborah Madison and Isa Chandra Moskowitz, and way before there was Ottolenghi, there was the Moosewood, which would go on to become synonymous with vegetarianism through its never-ending line of cookbooks, promoting vegetarian cooking at a time when it was still considered pretty revolutionary and fringy to not eat meat.

There is a hip restaurant-within-a-restaurant in the Mission, and it’s serving unique reconfigurations of East Asian food that occasionally sacrifice authenticity to please San Francisco’s more baroque palates. If that sounds to you like Mission Chinese Food, you’re about half-right. It’s actually Pink Zebra, a 40-seat project from Jesse Koide, who’s been running MCF since Danny Bowien took off for the Lower East Side. Pink Zebra is sited within Tao Lin on 20th Street and, as Eater noted, it’s named for Koide’s headband, but it could easily be called Mission Japanese Food.

Specifically, the 75 pounds of sugar the average American eats in a year, and the steps that the FDA is taking to curtail that consumption. As with most stories about the incredible power of the corporate food industry, it's more about what lobbying groups are doing to strike down an "added sugar" line item on nutrition labels.

    Phish is in the midst of a block of sold out shows at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (October 27-29). The Monday night concert featured a rare first set opener of “Walfredo” with the band members switching instruments for the song. The evening’s highlights included John Fishman and his iconic vacuum cleaner solo and favorites such as Chalk Dust Torture, Slave to the Traffic Light, Axilla, Rift, 2001 Space Odyssey, and Maze. The show also featured Phish’s debut of a, seemingly impromptu, version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to with roaring approval of the, singing along, crowd. With Game 6 being tonight, partying Phish fans will join Giants fans in Civic Center Plaza where there will be a World Series viewing party on a large screen set up by the City.
