When the family-owned Cuco’s Burritos closed after interminable squabbles with the landlord, I assumed its replacement would be something hideously slick and corporate. What a relief to be proven dead wrong, smug, know-it-all cynic that I am. I’m still going to miss that plantain burrito for a long while, but Salvadoran Emanuel Coffee is exactly the kind of business that’s becoming a rarity in a neighborhood like the Lower Haight.

When it comes to Top Chef, the Bay Area has had its fair share of representatives as competitors. Unfortunately, none have been able to take home the big prize, if you exclude the Masters spin-off which was been won both by Chris Cosentino and Douglas Keane in back-to-back years. This year, Chef Melissa King looked poised to battle it out at the top, but despite amazing efforts through 13 rounds, she earned a fourth place finish among the 16 chef squad. However, the strong camaraderie between her and eventual winner, Chef Mei Lin of L.A.’s ink restaurant, provided some of the show’s best moments.

No, they're not made from real Girl Scouts, not even Girl Scout Cookies, but today Upper Haight cocktail mecca The Alembic brings back its Girl Scout Cookie cocktails. The four drinks — not flavored with the cookies as much as meant to be paired with them — were such a hit last year that Alembic head bartender Larry Piaskowy made a whole new set for 2015.

A few days later,  we’re still not sure what we think about titling a menu section “Snackles.” But besides that, we enjoyed an early meal at AL’s Place, the new restaurant from Chef Aaron London, who took over when Chef Jeremy Fox left Ubuntu, the outstanding vegetable-celebrating restaurant in Napa that closed in 2012.

With its teal exterior and not-too-clinical white interior, the restaurant gives off a bit of a beach-y vibe, all the more noticeable in this outer Mission corner spot.

A new documentary called Deli Man opens in early March, and is an interesting look at the culture, food, and people of Jewish delis. Look for a serving of Bay Area representation in the form of commentary & footage from Wise Sons proprietors Evan Bloom and Leo Beckerman — shown transporting bakers’ racks through the Mission & sharing that the high cost of meat makes it tough to run a business.

Get in Line Now: Austin's Franklin Barbecue Is Popping Up in S.F. in May

It's just a typical morning — you're drinking your coffee, skimming your RSS feed — and then the world screeches to a halt when you see Eater SF's scoop that Austin's esteemed brisket-peddler Franklin Barbecue is coming to San Francisco for a few days in mid-May.

We've never waited in the hours-long line in Austin, though we have on good authority that it's worth doing at least once just for a taste of the ambrosial brisket. We've spent plenty of time drooling over money shots in magazines and its cameo in Chef. And now, like magic, it will be transported to S.F.

The Inner Sunset’s Pomelo is a bit of a rebel when it comes to menu inspiration. So often restaurants zero in on a very specific cuisine and theme, dead-set, zoomed-in on a place as small as a sparsely populated Greek island where the chef recently honeymooned or a certain arrondissement of Paris where a chef grew up or backstreet alleyway of Tokyo that is home to the world’s best yakitori. Pomelo’s vision spans the entire globe. They aren’t going for the niche. They are going for it all. The menu stops in the Philippines, Japan, Mexico, Santa Barbara, Cuba, and even Gilroy. Just because the menu thinks big doesn’t mean the flavors can’t be big, too.

Go Back to Homeroom with Four Barrel Coffee

Around the corner from Four Barrel’s Valencia location sits Homeroom, a space that provides the community with classes about topics ranging from the science behind espresso-making to conflicts in coffee-producing countries.

Four Barrel decided to offer classes a year and a half ago, after customers expressed interest in learning from the company’s full-time trainers. They converted part of their storage space to hold classes, so students make themselves comfortable on bags of unroasted coffee beans while learning from trainers.

“We had people whose whole day was dedicated to teaching and talking about coffee (to the wholesale accounts),” says Tayler Mehit, the training and wholesale manager of Four Barrel. “The longer we were doing this the more we would receive inquires about doing it for people who didn’t work in wholesale accounts. Folks would come in, enjoy their experience, have a nice chat with one of our baristas, and wish they had an opportunity to learn more, be a little more specific.”
