Around the corner from Four Barrel’s Valencia location sits Homeroom, a space that provides the community with classes about topics ranging from the science behind espresso-making to conflicts in coffee-producing countries.
Four Barrel decided to offer classes a year and a half ago, after customers expressed interest in learning from the company’s full-time trainers. They converted part of their storage space to hold classes, so students make themselves comfortable on bags of unroasted coffee beans while learning from trainers.
“We had people whose whole day was dedicated to teaching and talking about coffee (to the wholesale accounts),” says Tayler Mehit, the training and wholesale manager of Four Barrel. “The longer we were doing this the more we would receive inquires about doing it for people who didn’t work in wholesale accounts. Folks would come in, enjoy their experience, have a nice chat with one of our baristas, and wish they had an opportunity to learn more, be a little more specific.”
