The roast chicken! The hamburger! The oysters! Zuni Café always presents the challenge of repeatedly ordering the tried-and-true classics that can never leave the menu or being a rebel, branching away from the status quo and opting for the constantly changing additions to the menu. Most of the Zuni legends, that consistently deserve the national spotlight they revel in, are not for vegetarians — even the fabled Caesar salad sports anchovies. Have no fear. A meat-free meal at the City’s most celebrated restaurant doesn’t just mean a bowl of mascarpone-slicked polenta.

Say what you will about all the new condo buildings on Market, but they’re giving us some fun new ground-level retail action. The otherwise nondescript edifice at Market, Noe and 16th Street is now home to Giddy Candy, and it’s 75-square feet of pure wholesome goodness, radiating sunbeams and Swedish fish.

China Gets a Taste of Americanized Chinese Food

Posted By on Tue, Dec 23, 2014 at 3:28 PM

It's an oddly disorienting experience to be traveling abroad and stumble on an "American restaurant" — not a chain, but a place that was opened by expats and sells pancakes and burgers and milkshakes to backpackers and America-philes. Inevitably the food is the same as what you'd find at home in name only, victim to the different ingredients and tastes of its host nation.

Salad Buzz: Mazarine Coffee Has a Salad with Coffee-Roasted Beets and Espresso Vinaigrette

Mazarine Coffee
on Market takes its cappuccino seriously. So seriously, in fact, that when they ordered six-ounce cappuccino cups from Heath Ceramics, they immediately determined that they actually held eight ounces of liquid and, certain that no true coffee aficionado would tolerate that, sent them right back to those chagrined mid-century modernists.

The Week in Vegan: Gifts, Guides and Tofu Salad

Posted By on Mon, Dec 22, 2014 at 1:53 PM

VeganWeek.jpg

It's Christmas, which means many of you will be flying back and forth and starving in airports. Luckily, there's a guide for everything these days, including where to eat when you're stuck waiting for your flight. No more stale crackers and diet Coke for you! (Unless that's your thing.)

Looking for a new holiday favorite? What about curried tofu salad? My mouth is literally watering just thinking about it and I am plotting on how I can get someone to make it for me.

If you're still searching for cruelty-free gifts, here are some you can make yourself. None of them feature popsicle sticks prominently, I promise.

Just Mayo, the miracle mayonnaise that isn't mayonnaise at all has persevered against Unilever, the giant multinational corporation which sued its tiny competitor for "false advertising." Apparently, you can call your mayonnaise mayonnaise, even if it doesn't have eggs in it.

Vegansaurus has an excellent gift guide for those of you shopping for non-vegans. Also, they're selling limited edition t-shirts, which I bought ten of and you should, too.

The Great Craft Lager Renaissance: 2015 Will be a Lager Year

Anchor California Lager - ANCHOR BREWING

  • Anchor California Lager

Long overshadowed by flashier IPAs and full-bodied stouts, the proud German-style lager is returning to favor in the craft beer community. These oft-understated expressions concern themselves not with assaulting your palate in a barrage of bitterness or cloying sweetness. Lagers rely instead on subtlety and complexity. And they are about to have their day.

So consider yourself warned — 2015 promises to be the Year of the Craft Lager.

Eat This: Pig's Head at Cockscomb

The pig's head at Cockscomb - ALICE DISHES

It’s been hard to miss all the buzz about Christopher Consentino’s new venture, Cockscomb, on Fourth Street in San Francisco. Three weeks in, the restaurant is packed wall-to-wall with a cross-section of San Franciscans — from suit-wearing lawyers to young hipsters and the after-work crowd — all eager to find out what the fuss is about.

The ambiance, and the room, heats up as the evening wears on. More buzz, more action to view in the open kitchen, more people watching, and most importantly, more plate watching as dishes go by en route to their destination. What’s that? What’s in it? How many items will fit on the table?
