Helmand Palace

2424 Van Ness
(at Green)
San Francisco, CA 94109
415-345-0072
After a Telegraph Hill landslide forced the closure of its original Broadway location, S.F.'s favorite Afghan restaurant has reopened on upper Van Ness. The name has changed slightly, but the food is just as good. The room is considerably smaller, but still charming, with white tablecloths, cloth napkins, and soft lighting, and paintings, photos, and handicrafts that evoke traditional Afghan life. Carnivores, don't miss the lamb dishes, which combine North Indian and Middle Eastern flavors. Helmand remains one of the few places in town that offers great food and white-tablecloth atmosphere at reasonable prices, especially at lunch.
