SPQR

1911 Fillmore (at Bush)
San Francisco, CA 94115
771-7779
Website
SPQR, the second venture from the people behind A16, makes a serious and mostly successful effort to capture the style and spirit of Roman cuisine. The new place is smaller, quieter, and cozier than A16, but SPQR's kitchen shows the same passion for preserving the best of traditional rustic Italian cooking while adapting it slightly for San Franciscan tastes and dining habits. You can eat an old-school multicourse Italian meal of antipasti, pasta, entrée, dessert, and coffee, or graze on a series of small plates and shareable main courses. Best choices include seafood appetizers, rigatoni all'amatriciana, braised-meat entrées, and dishes with gutsy seasonings such as anchovies, bottarga, and capers. Pastry chef Jane Tseng's desserts are among the best in town. - Robert Lauriston
