The Big 4
1075 California (at Taylor)
San Francisco, CA 94108
A subtly illuminated, luxuriously appointed temple to the four Nob Hill robber barons who built the first transcontinental railroad across the United States. The menu is as robustly American as the restaurant's Gilded Age ambience: moist, dense crab cakes; a savory four-cheese bread pudding; seared ostrich steak with the flavor of a good porterhouse; and a buttery coconut-pecan tart crowned with bourbon ice cream. The food isn't as ethereal as the stratospheric prices might indicate, however. Cocktail piano sparkles in the intimate hearthside bar, a fine place to contemplate the establishment's many historical artifacts. Standard but comprehensive wine list.
