The Fly Trap

606 Folsom (at Second St.)
San Francisco, CA 94107
415-243-0580
Website
This handsome spot, popular for business lunches and date dinners, features old-time San Francisco favorites, cooked with variable quality. When they're good, they're very good; when bad, perhaps the next course will be better. Highlights include ideal creamed spinach; tangy, revisionist celery victor; and a "white salad" that, in cooler months, pairs bitter Belgian endive with sweet fresh water chestnuts. Other good bets are crab cakes, pastas (like a rich crab agnolotti), veal piccata, simple grilled meats and fish, and a great gooey chocolate torte. However, sauce portions are stingy, oyster concoctions (including a leaden Hangtown Fry) are bivalve-impaired, and some classic dishes can fall unexpectedly flat. Wine prices are exorbitant, and the noise level can be excruciating.
