The House of Chicken and Waffles
444 Embarcadero West
Oakland, CA 94607
The fried chicken is extraordinary and the waffles uneven (ask for them crispy or they'll come out undercooked) at this immaculate take on a 50's diner. The menu's numerous named plates are changes wrung on chicken and various combinations of waffles, eggs, grits, Southern vegetables (cooked with smoked turkey instead of pork), and corn bread. For example, Angie's Delight is "one succulent breast, one delicious waffle," while Homeboy is "3 wings and waffle or potato salad." The place also does chicken livers and gizzards, smothered or fried, but the fried chicken is king.
