For a fun, feel-good rap song, it doesn’t get much better than Sebastopol rapper J. Lately’s new single, “Socks On.”
Over a circuitous synth melody produced by The Blacksmiths, Lately and HBK Gang member CJ rap about smoking weed with fans, loving music, and eating good food “straight up out of grandma’s kitchen.”
Lately says he penned the song shortly after returning from a February tour with Richmond rapper The Locksmith.
“It’s inspired by the fun times of being on tour and seeing your dreams start to come to fruition,” he says.
Lately adds that he included CJ on the track “because he’s someone who’s also been steadily pursuing his dreams and having a great time while doing it.”
The single is what you’d call a “loosie,” because it won’t be included on Lately’s forthcoming EP, Nachos, which is sure to be fire if this song is any indication.
Lately will also be hitting the road at the end of April for his Spring Cleaning Tour with A-Plus from Hieroglyphics, and though he won’t be performing in the Bay Area proper, he does have a show in Santa Rosa and San Jose on May 18 and 19, respectively.
