Eight Questions for Rachel Torro

Rachel Torro, Sunday, Aug. 12, 1:30-3 p.m., at the House by Heineken.

Growing up in Kansas, when did you find your passion for electronic music?

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, but going to high school in Kansas there wasn’t much to do except drive around and end up at a Sonic. I quickly got introduced to some older kids at my school as the new girl and got swept up into parties or all-age raves around Lawrence. Sorry, mom!

Did you move to S.F. because of Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts?

I had been living in Saigon, Vietnam before S.F. and was pretty eager to get somewhere more current music-wise. I came back to the States with San Francisco being my first stop, and decided it was the only city in the U.S. I would want to live. I started DJing right around the time I decided to go to Revere for metalsmithing, and the music just took off faster than I thought it would. I still have a cool ring from casting class I rock sometimes, though.

Tell me about the time when you purchased your first DJ equipment? What software did you buy?

I started on Traktor with an S2 because I couldn’t afford CJDs or turntables. I was tired of digging days on end for music but just giving it away to a bunch of dudes, so I watched a lot of YouTube videos and lurked in all the DJ booths until I figured out how to mix.

Did you ever think that you’d be playing on the Polo Fields at Outside Lands?

A girl can dream! Shout out to Robbie and HUSHconcerts for making it a reality.

What has been the best festival you’ve ever played at?

Easy. Desert Hearts, 100 percent.

What’s in store for 2019?

Not sure yet! Maybe a new gym membership I’ll never use. And hopefully, some original production I’m happy with from yours truly.

If you could choose one restaurant to eat at in San Francisco before leaving on tour for Europe, where would you go?

Iza for the best ramen in the city.

Who are you most excited to see at Outside Lands?

Ummm, I might have told my mom I was “opening” for Janet Jackson, so, I think that says it all right there.
