The day that Maarten Smeets got fired in 2011 was both great and not so great. On the one hand, the 35-year-old Dutchman was out of a job. On the other hand, had Smeets not been laid off, he might have never joined forces with Lars Dales, with whom he now makes house music under the name Detroit Swindle. With one album and a handful of EPs under their belts, Smeets and Dales make soulful electronic music grounded in deep, thumping bass and shimmery, tropical synths. Put another way, if Detroit Swindle were a shirt, it would be a classic button-up drenched in bright colors and intricate patterns.

Detroit Swindle with Adesse Versions and Nachtbraker, at 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3, at Halcyon. $10-$20;
