Ever since the Grammy Award-winning folk duo the Civil Wars disbanded in 2014, singer-songwriter John Paul White has made sure to prove he can stand on his own.White dropped his second solo album, Beulah, in 2016, using his velvety-smooth voice to sing about love, loss, and heartbreak over twangy acoustic guitar production. Since his previous band’s break up, he’s started a record label and opened a studio in his hometown of Florence, Alabama. White’s also in the midst of adjusting to working with a full band for the first time in 10 years, a stark contrast to the minimalist setup he had with Joy Williams (when it was just the two of them onstage). “I’m having to relearn how to do everything,” he told the Phoenix New Times last week. “I am learning how to walk again, without sounding too cliché about it.”
