Oakland singer Kehlani has a knack for spinning unfortunate life events into upbeat, pop-leaning ballads. In her most recent single, “Advice,” the 21-year-old turns her split with Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player Kyrie Irving and her attempted suicide in March after rumors emerged that she was cheating on him with PARTYNEXTDOOR, into a parable on how not to act in similarly stressful and emotionally fraught situations. “I almost lost my mind,” she wails in the pulsing track. “I left myself behind/ I almost crashed and fell right from the sky.” With almost 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Kehlani has emerged as one of the biggest names to come out of the Bay Area in the last few years, rivaled only by the James Dean look-a-like Oakland rapper G-Eazy.
