You want to know something crazy? Ms. Lauryn Hill has only put out one — one! — solo studio album, and it’s about to turn 20 in two years. Granted, before she branched out as a solo artist she was one-third of the Fugees, but still! Hill is a legend — some would even say a goddess — and she continues to amass over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, despite the fact that she’s only released a handful of new songs in the last two decades. Sure, one good album can get you far — and in Hill’s case can earn you 10 Grammy nominations and five Grammy Awards — but most artists, if they stop putting out music, fade into oblivion after that. Not so with Hill. Festivals still vie for appearances from her, and filmmakers reach out to her for narration and voiceover work. The fact that she’s currently on tour with rapper Nas, with whom she teamed up for a few shows in 2012, is a big fucking deal — not only because of her well-known aloofness, but because this will mark her first string of public performances since her release from jail in 2013 for tax evasion.
