Lucy Dacus @ Rickshaw Stop

Fuck being funny. Twenty-one-year-old Lucy Dacus is tired of “feeling like the odd man out” and would rather be “the cute one,” “the best dressed,” “the smartest,” or “the artist.” Or so she says in her rough, unpolished, and string-filled single, “I Don't Wanna Be Funny Anymore,” off her 2016 debut, No Burden. Recorded in Nashville, No Burden is rife with chunky chords — in addition to singing and songwriting, Dacus is also a guitarist — and poetic lyrics that paint evocative portraits of Dacus' life and the people she surrounds herself with. Take, for instance, “Strange Torpedo,” which is about a friend with a “bunch of bad habits” who, despite Dacus' attempts to intervene and help, can't seem to “hit anything solid yet.” There's a strong streak of folk and whimsy to Dacus' vocals, but the heavy instrumentals add an unmistakable rock bent. Dacus is intent on creating her own style of music, and we're excited to see what she comes up with next.
