The 20th Street Block Party Returns, Saturday, Aug. 18

Just as Burners have Decompression, Outside Lands attendees need something a week later to keep their mid-summer spirits up. On Saturday, Aug. 18, the 20th Street Block Party returns with eight sets, tons of food, and plenty of entertainment — and while the Mission might not be as warm as Black Rock Desert, it sure beats shivering on the Polo Field.

Noise Pop announced the lineup for the sixth annual block party, which includes Lorely Rodriguez’s electropop side project Empress of, Long Island ska-punk veteran Jeff Rosenstock — formerly of Bomb the Music Industry! and The Arrogant Sons of Bitches — along with psych-rockers The Marías and San Francisco’s own The She’s. Although the food and non-musical entertainment lineup have yet to be announced, it’ll be sizeable enough to spill outside the confines of 20th Street to 19th and along both Harrison and Bryant streets. (In other words, it’s a big-ass neighborhood party.)  While admission all afternoon is free, you can opt for a VIP “Headliner Experience” that includes an indoor lounge situated atop Trick Dog with views of the festivities, plus complimentary wine and beer, specialty snacks and — the ultimate amenity, as any festival-goer can tell you — a private restroom.

Last year, some 22,000 people attended, to hear Neon Indian and eat some Alicia’s Tamales Los Mayas, and this year looks to be more of the same. As ever, it’s a benefit for the Mission Language and Vocational School (MLVS), an organization that helps provide occupational skills to the neighborhood’s large and diverse population of immigrants, working people, and non-native English speakers. Let’s take it to the streets!

20th Street Block Party, Saturday, Aug. 18, noon-6:30 p.m., centered on Noise Pop headquarters at 20th and Bryant streets. Free-$50, 20thstreetblockparty.com
