Driver Critically Injures Pedestrian Near I-280

A pedestrian is in the hospital with critical injuries after a driver struck him in the Bayview Thursday morning, according to police.

The man was crossing the road near Jerrold Avenue and Rankin Streets in the Bayview when a driver struck him around 1:20 a.m. As of Thursday afternoon, he remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The 28-year-old driver remained at the scene.

Just a couple blocks east across the Interstate 280 on Jerrold and Toland, another driver struck a pedestrian in September 2017. The pedestrian, 57-year-old Konstantinos Vardakastanis and owner of Gus’s Community Market, died at the scene.

The driver fled and police at the time ask for help in finding a silver sedan with front-end damage.

Construction for street improvements on Jerrold Avenue begins this summer, but SFMTA focused on an area west of both incidents. Where Highway 101, Cesar Chavez, and Bayshore meet, officials have curb ramps, medians, and widened sidewalks planned for installation.
