FBI Thwarts Plan to Blow Up Pier 39 on Christmas

Pier 39 (SF Examiner)

While the president and some of his prominent supporters are delegitimizing the FBI and claiming without evidence that its agents are plotting a coup, the Bureau thwarted a potential Christmas Day terrorist attack on Pier 39.

The Examiner reports that 26-year-old tow-truck driver and ex-Marine Everitt Aaron Jameson of Modesto had attempted to source materials for a pipe bomb — including assault rifle, ammunition, powder, tubing, and nails — from someone he believed to be a senior leader for the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or Daesh. That individual turned out to be an FBI agent. The Islamic Center of Merced confirmed that Jameson was a “recent convert.”

It was to be a suicide attack as well, CBS News reveals. According to the formal FBI complaint,

Jameson specifically named Pier 39 in San Francisco as a target location because he had been there before and knew that it was a heavily crowded area, and that, according to Jameson, no reconnaissance or site survey would be necessary (because Jameson already was familiar with the area). Jameson explained that he also desired to use explosives, and described a plan in which explosives could “tunnel” or “funnel” people into a location where Jameson could inflict casualties.

While the FBI does have a proven record of singling out loners and recruiting them under dubious Islamist pretenses so that they can subsequently arrest these trumped-up terrorists with great fanfare, this particular incident was apparently quite serious. Jameson seems to have wanted to replicate the Oct. 31 attack in Lower Manhattan that killed eight people and injured 11.

“At this time, there are no known additional threats to San Francisco related to this investigation,” Acting Mayor London Breed said in a statement.

The Islamic State tends to ramp up its call for violence in the West during the holiday season. According to the Examiner, FBI agents in Modesto raided a home and found rifles and a note signed by one “Abdallah Abu Everitt Ibn Gordon Al-Amriki” dated Dec. 16. It read, in part, “I Abdallah add Everett ibn Gordon have committed these acts upon Kuffar, in the name of Dar al Islam, Allahu Akbar!” and denounced Pres. Trump’s decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
